Venice Biennale, New Australian Pavilion Di Stasio Ideas Competition 2008
Transformation of a survival culture to the desires of a cultured survival; the new Australia Pavilion is just that.
Offering a new beginning from a wild and brutal past, the Pavilion expresses the unnerving balance between nature and civilisation. The unique striped marsupial thylacine captures the imagination like no other Australian animal. We propose to transport the memory of the last ‘Tasmanian Tiger’ from that famous image taken in 1936 at Hobart Zoo.
Reborn, it clothes an exhibition space that aspires to another famous Australian iconic building.
A nod to inspiration and hope for beauty, the union is perhaps literally stretching it.
