The opportunity to refurbish and complete Astra ski lodge has come about some 27 years after the original construction. Having worked as design and project architect on the 60 bed hotel/ lodge with Hayball Leonard Stent in the late 1980’s, Grant Amon of GAA was given a brief to completely renovate and extend the lodge in 2015.
Over a short design and build timeline, the existing facility was to be re-planned, clad, decorated and purpose fitted to replenish the existing layout and function into a better operating and visually embellished alpine hotel experience. Now complete, the upgraded and renovated spaces of Stage 1 and 2 include the Foyer, Bar and Restaurant, Pool, Sauna and Change room Facilities, Reading Room, Treatment Rooms, as well as the completely refurbished rooms. Stage 3 involves and extension to the building to house new rooms and is set to be complete for the 2017 ski season. Astra represents a truly contemporary enhancement of an original 1980’s space that aims to rejuvenate the Bar and Restaurant facilities to current and future quality expectations. It represents an example of retaining the working ‘bones’ of the building and providing a new point of reference departure for the new owners expressed desire for ‘the best ski hotel in the country’.
By engaging the original architect, GAA’s experience in the hospitality industry provided a great opportunity to re brand and upgrade the entire building, including the now completed Pool and Sauna below as a first stage with the new ski entry and extra rooms added for stage 2. By installing a completely new chef, staff, public bar, restaurant servery operation, along with the revived interior, the combination of eat, drink and design is a key feature of the new Astra.
