"A contemporary reimagining of the Old Macaroni Factory, Macaroni Pavilion by Grant Amon Architects builds upon its rich Italian history through the use of traditional forms and materiality.

The new residence responds to this culturally significant building in a respectful yet contemporary manner. As a continued evolution of this heritage place, the design builds upon its rich Italian history, drawing inspiration from traditional Italian forms and materials. Central to the design is a reinterpretation of the classic Italian arch. Through an exploration of the brick arch in various manifestations, the final form emerges as a three-point flattened arch supported by elegant, tapered columns. These arches are not only structural but spatially expressive, their varying spans also reflect the internal sequence of spaces. The north-facing open-plan living area flows from the kitchen and dining zones through to the lounge, culminating in a daybed alcove framed by a corner arch. The layout embraces flexibility, incorporating sliding doors and adaptable room configurations to create a sense of fluidity within the open-plan environment. A defining feature is the arched loggia terrace, which acts as a transitional zone between the solid perimeter brickwork and the inner living space, framed by full-height timber doors and windows.

Through the use of arches and brickwork, Macaroni Pavilion makes a meaningful contribution to the region by reinterpreting traditional Italian architectural language in a way that is both contextually responsive and deeply connected to place. The result is a refined architectural response that honours the historical significance of the site while thoughtfully embracing the needs and sensibilities of contemporary Australian living. "
