The ideas behind the Future City Concept design were concerned with possibilities of habitation in under utilised agricultural land areas near existing villages in central Honshu Island, Japan. Purely conceptual in nature, the Future City as it was named, looked at how development might look in these areas of old rice paddies with a definite tilt towards a kind of ‘Blade Runner’ style collection of mini cities.
Ideas included mobile pod capsule hotel rooms that travelled to chosen position on monorails to park for the night and other such coloured neon lit future follies expressed the bubble economy ‘no fear of the future’ sentiment prevalent in Japan in the early 1990’s. With no specific brief given, conceptual propositions and landscape / building designs were explored. Some buildings were developed in greater detail, such as the 3 theatre complex but the majority of the exercise was to examine form , image, program, landscape integration and protection for future uses.
