This compact townhouse project aims to represent the possibilities of a considered, small scale inner urban medium density residential development. Replacing a dilapidated timber cottage on a street corner in West St.Kilda, near the commercial Fitzroy St. strip, the project consists of 2 x 2 Bed townhouses each with a single bathroom/ Laundry, open Kitchen / Dining / Living area, Garage, Courtyard and generous rooftop Deck.
The design features an integration of materials and forms to appear as a single building not separate townhouses, whilst still providing separate identifiable entry points. The streetscape in both directions was considered, continuing the various mass and rhythms of the existing housing in the street by proposing main massing elements clad in either timber or metal. As a finishing gesture the ensemble is then ‘wrapped’ in a glulam timber pergola frame with mesh infills, up and over the roof deck area. The random placement of mesh panels to the pergola will encourage a natural green wall for climbing plants providing building shade, colour and contribution to the streetscape.
