Macaroni Pavilion

Located in Main Road, Hepburn Springs, the Macaroni Pavilion is a recently completed residence at the Heritage Vic. listed site of the Old Macaroni Factory built in 1859 by brothers Giacomo and Pietro Lucini. The Old Macaroni Factory is aesthetically significant for its interior decorative scheme and is one of the most intact domestic, secular murals in Australia.

The new residence needed to respond to this culturally important building in a respectful yet contemporary manner. The design and form of the residence, coupled with the critical selection of material was paramount for its success. The choice of a northern Italian made, tumbled style lime wash brick ‘San Selmo’, complimented the existing weathered and washed cement render finish of the historic Factory. Incorporating a desire to reference classic Italian arches, we explored the brick arch in various manifestations, looking at a three-point flattened arch and elegant tapered columns. Working closely with the structural engineer Peter Felicetti, a concrete infill bond beam solution was developed to avoid any exposed steel lintels, with emphasis on different arch widths and an expressive cantilever arch corner return. A loggia terrace separates the main perimeter brickwork, with an inner wall of full height timber doors and windows.

The brickwork has been expertly laid by the Tanzen father & sons for the builder Nick Andrew and achieved a high level of finish throughout to create a Pavilion that now sits majestically overlooking the heritage site, with its original grape vines, gardens and stone paving.
