The project involved a simple and effective renovation of an existing semi-detached residence in Elwood. Retaining the front four rooms as Bedrooms and Study, the entire rear section was demolished to allow for a new living area with a new Bathroom, a Laundry, and an open plan Kitchen, Dining and Sitting area.

A raised roof section with ample glazing to the rear was the key to the design, framing the outlook to the rear garden, as well as enabling additional sun light and height with views of the trees and sky. A covered timber pergola that connects to existing brick paving, modulated the transition to the garden.

Extensive opening to the rear greenery was employed without needing to combat excessive summer heat gain and natural ventilation is provided throughout the stack effect from the highlight window louvres. The raingarden captures stormwater and filters it through layers of soil and plants, creates a living landscape while also functioning as a natural water management system.

Recycled timber flooring and benchtops, as well the external timber cladding and windows kept the material selection natural and comfortable.
